How it Works

2. DROP OFF

Bring your kit to Chester (CH1) at the agreed time. Clean, dry, knots out. If something's obviously going to fail, retire it before it comes in. Leave non-LOLER items like helmets, gloves, spikes and sawdust in the van.

First visit? Bring your previous LOLER certificates and/or purchase invoices - these are important, they pin down first-use dates.

3. EXAMINATION

Pick up your kit. When your kit's done, you'll get a message from me with the final price and a card payment link. Pay by card and the PDF certificate follows.

1. BOOK

Get in touch via WhatsApp or email. Tell me how many kits and what type. I'll confirm a slot and give you a price.

4. COLLECT

Every item is examined against LOLER 1998. Each one comes back as pass or fail - with the reason documented on the certificate. Anything that fails is set aside and clearly labelled.

Extras Price

• Additional rope or harness £8 each

• Any other additional item £2 each

• Clean and lubricate a karabiner in order to pass examination £1 each

• Apply labelling to pass examination £2 each

• Re-inspection of a failed item after repair or replacement £10 each

What counts as a kit?

A climbing kit is up to 20 items, including one harness and up to two ropes. A rigging kit is up to 20 items, including one rigging rope. Got more than that in the bag? Extras are priced below - you only pay for what you bring.

Do You Need a LOLER Thorough Examination?

You'll need current thorough examination records if:

• You employ climbers and supply their harnesses, ropes, and connectors

• You're tendering for council or commercial contracts that ask for LOLER compliance

• Your insurer or the Arboricultural Association requires proof of inspection

• You subcontract and a new employer wants to see your records before you leave the ground

Climbing kit (PPE) needs a thorough examination every 6 months. Rigging kit needs one every 12 months. An incident, overload, or manufacturer requirement can shorten that - some manufacturers specify 6-monthly checks on certain lowering devices.

Qualifications

I hold the City & Guilds Level 3 Certificate of Competence - Thorough Examination of Arboricultural Equipment. The qualification your employer or insurer will recognise on the certificate. Also CS38, CS39, CS41, CS30, CS31, CS32, CS35

What you get

A Report of Thorough Examination compliant with Schedule 1 of LOLER 1998 - the document your employer, insurer or client will ask for.

Every item listed individually: manufacturer, model, serial number, date of first use, safe working load (SWL), the result, and where something fails, the reason it failed. A clear safe / not safe verdict against each one, and the date the next examination is due.

Climbing and rigging kits are certificated separately. Multiple kits are organised by kit name, so your paperwork matches how you actually work.

Supplied as a PDF by email, usually the same day payment clears, with your weekly pre-use check sheets included as standard.

Do your prices include VAT?

No, I'm not VAT registered so there is no VAT to pay

How fast is turnaround?

The standard service is for a 24hr turnaround, drop it off first thing, pick it up the following day first thing. If you're in a real rush we can sometimes do an overnight or weekend examination so you have no downtime (+£15). For overnight, drop off by 6.30pm and pick up from 7am the next day.

Can I bring multiple kits?

Yes, bring multiple kits as long as they are separately bagged with the kit name (ie 'Dave's Climb Kit'). On the certificate we can organise them by kit name so you can keep track of your paperwork more easily. Remember there is no mixing of climbing and rigging kit - it's PPE or it's rigging never both.

What if items fail?

It happens, and it's not a disaster - it's the system working. Kit doesn't last forever, and the whole point of a thorough examination is to find the problem before it finds you.

The item is tagged as failed and marked as failed on your certificate, along with the reason. You get it back with everything else - nothing is confiscated or destroyed without your say-so.

My strong, strong recommendation is that it comes out of service immediately and doesn't go back in until it's been repaired and re-examined or replaced. I have no power to enforce that, and I won't pretend otherwise. But a failed item is failed for a reason, and the reason is always the same one: it's no longer safe.

How do I pay and get certificates?

Payment is due on completion either card, cash or BACS; certificates are sent as soon as payment clears.

I only have a rope and harness to examine...

It's easy to let these things lapse, my best advice for you is to get it re-inspected as soon as you can. We will automatically contact you 1 month before your next inspection is due with a reminder to help this not happen - all part of the service.

I'm based too far from Chester, can I post my kit?

Yes, contact me for more details. This service costs a bit more as postage has to be paid for but the inspection price remains the same. This option works well if you have a smaller kit as postage is based upon weight, it also saves you the drop off and pick up time.

My kit's already overdue - is that a problem?

Perhaps you're still climbing on a Blake's hitch? If you have a very small kit message me for a price. We can also accept kits via post/courier so this can work out quite economical for some especially ecologists or rescue only kits which tend to be small.

Can I wait while it's done?

It's a 24hr turnaround so that will not be possible.
